Pain Management

The Pain Management services of the HPC are a part of the comprehensive Pain Program at St. Alexius Medical Center. The Pain Management Program provides unique, gentle, and progressive therapies specifically designed to reduce pain and improve function. The uniqueness of the Pain management Program is that it looks at the individuals entire body rather than focus on one or two painful joints.

This approach to whole body evaluation and treatment has proven to be effective in the treatment of chronic pain relating to muscle and connective tissues.

The Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants of the Pain Management Program incorporate multiple treatment techniques which increase the potential for successful reduction of pain and increased function.

Some of these techniques include:

  • Feldenkrais Body Movements
  • Trigger Point Therapy
  • Myofascial Release
  • Breathing / Relaxation Techniques
  • Manual Traction
  • Postural Respiration
  • Strengthening
  • Cranio-Sacral Therapy

In addition to these manual techniques the therapists will incorporate a wide variety of modalities which may include:

  • Ultrasound
  • Iontophoresis
  • Biofeedback
  • Phonophoresis
  • E-Stim
  • TENS
  • Paraffin
  • Fluido Therapy

No matter what manual technique or modality is used, the treatment is tailored to meet each individual needs.

Common Diagnosis Treated:

  • Repetitive Use Injury
  • Traumatic Injury
  • Migraines
  • Muscle Tension Headaches
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Arthritis

  • Neck and Back Pain
  • Jaw pain
  • Frozen Shoulder

To obtain the greatest amount of success the patient must commit to attending occupational therapy sessions from 1 to 3 times a week. The patient must take an active role in making lifestyle changes and follow a daily Home Exercise Program. Gradual progression from direct treatment to self management with improved function is our long time goal.

Insurance Coverage:

Outpatient Occupational Therapy is generally covered by insurance carriers. We encourage everyone to first check with their provider about the specifics of their coverage.

In most outpatient settings there are limitations to the length and amount of therapy allowed for each condition. The therapists of the Pain Management Program will continually document:

  • Your Current Productivity Level
  • Your Daily Functional Activities
  • Your Pain Levels
  • Your Compliance to the therapy
  • Your Self Care Techniques
  • Your Sleep Management
  • Your Overall Progress

By documenting this information the therapist has the greatest potential to justify continued therapy beyond traditional time frames and limits. To arrange an appointment call: 701-530-8100
