Breast Localization

Please report to Admitting 15 minutes before your scheduled exam time.

PREP: Patient will be admitted to pre-surgery. Consent will be obtained. Patient should not eat or drink anything after midnight. An I.V. is required. Pre-exam lab work may be required.

PURPOSE: A Breast Localization is performed if a breast mass is present.

WHAT TO EXPECT: The procedure is performed with the patient lying down on a cart. The area of interest will be scanned with ultrasound and then prepped with an iodine scrub and a sterile drape will be applied. Numbing medication will be administered to the site. A wire will be placed into the breast marking the area of interest. The wire will be taped to the breast and the patient will be sent for a lightly compressed 2-view mammogram. The wire will be removed by the surgeon.

TIME FRAME: 30 - 45 minutes
