Please report to Admitting 15 minutes before your scheduled exam time
PREP: Nothing to eat or drink 12 hours prior to initial exam time.
PURPOSE: Detection of a CSF leak, evaluation for normal pressure hydrocephalus, dementia, or shunt obstruction.
WHAT TO EXPECT: The radiologist will do a spinal tap, placing a needle into the spinal canal in order to inject a radioactive isotope into the canal. You will need to remain horizontal for at least two hours following. You will be brought to the Radiology department for imaging 4, 24, 48, and 72 hours afterward for imaging.
TIME FRAME: 1 hour each day.
POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS: Minimal to no side effects from the radioactive isotope. Possible headache from CSF leakage.
