Dr. Hetland joined Mid Dakota Clinic PrimeCare in July 1978 as a specialist in internal medicine. In addition to internal medicine, his interests over the past 35 years have included sports medicine, geriatric medicine, corporate medicine, preventative medicine and wellness. In December 2013, Dr. Hetland closed his clinic practice and turned his attention solely to geriatric medicine, caring for patients in Bismarck-Mandan nursing homes only.
A native of North Dakota, Dr. Hetland received a Bachelor of Arts in zoology from North Dakota State University and a Bachelor of Science in medicine from the University of North Dakota. He earned his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Minnesota Affiliated Hospitals (Abbott Northwestern) in Minneapolis, Minn.
Dr. Hetland is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine with the University of North Dakota School of Medicine. He is also a member of the American College of Physicians, American Medical Association, North Dakota Medical Association, Sixth District Medical Society, and the American Medical Joggers Association.
