POSITION TITLE: Surgical Technologist  
DEPARTMENT: Surgical Services
RESPONSIBLE TO: Assistant Director/Clinical Coordinator

(Infants, Children, Adolescents, Adults, and Geriatrics)
Predominant Population (>10%)=   Adults and Geriatrics                             
Occasional Population (3.1 - 9.9%) = Children                 
Infrequent Population (<3%) =  Infants

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: Works under the general supervision of the Assistant Director/Clinical Coordinator.  Provides and performs patient care services associated with the overall operation of Surgical Services in accordance with the mission and philosophy of CHI St. Alexius Health.


  • Consistently keeps assigned Operating Room clean and orderly, supplies and equipment are returned to proper stock points.
  • Sets up, maintains and monitors the sterile field assures the highest standards of sterile technique are maintained during the procedure.
  • Communicates with RN accepting and following through on delegated assignments.
  • Provides assistance to physicians, patients, family members, visitors and staff as necessary.
  • Performs counts in collaboration with the RN prior to start of case and at appropriate intervals.
  • Participates actively in the Time-Out process.
  • Passes instruments to surgeon during the procedure.
  • Anticipates surgeons needs during the procedure.
  • Maintains work operations by following policies and procedures.
  • Assures all medications and solutions are labelled and delivered safely.


  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:  Associate degree from an approved school of Surgical Technology preferred; on the job training accepted based on experience and proven competency, LPN educational preparation accepted.

Licensure: Must be registered on the North Dakota Board of Nursing Unlicensed Assistive Persons (UAP) Registry or the Registry operated by the State Department of Consolidated Laboratories.  If not registered, then must obtain registration immediately following orientation and training by CHI St. Alexius Health as stated in the policy “Eligibility for Employment.”

Experience: No previous experience required.

Skills:  Ability to organize assignments and work under pressure.  Basic Life Support Certification within 480 hours of employment and meets re-certification as required.

Interpersonal Skills:  Good communication skills are necessary because of constant communication, both oral and written, with patients, families, visitors, and medical center staff.

Physical Effort: Medium; Sometimes involves a maximum physical effort of 35 pounds.

Hours of Work: Rotating shift work or straight evenings or nights.  Rotating holidays and weekends may be required.

Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

Other: Works under the following conditions: potential exposure to mechanical, chemical, electrical and infectious environmental hazards.
Able to perform effectively in emergency and stressful situations.

CHI St. Alexius Health offers a competitive compensation plan including evening/night shift differentials, vacation, holiday, and weekend incentives.
Vacation Time (in addition to sick and holiday leave)

  • 1-5 years = 2 weeks paid vacation
  • 6-15 years = 3 weeks paid vacation
  • 16 years and after = 4 weeks paid vacation


  • Time and a half when working holidays
  • Eight hours of holiday pay will be added during the pay period that the holiday occurs, for those not working said holiday. These holiday hours can be used anytime throughout the year for vacation, sick leave, etc.
  • Paid holidays are based on employment status (i.e. full time, part time, help out etc.)

Sick Leave

  • Receive 26 hours after orientation period is complete
  • Four hours accrued for every 80 hours worked. Allowed to accumulate indefinitely.

Retirement Plan

  • 403B
  • You can begin contributing right away
  • After one year with the organization and having worked 1,000 hours, CHI St. Alexius Health will contribute three percent of your gross wages
  • CHI St. Alexius Health will make a matching contribution up to an additional one percent of gross wages
  • Employer contributions fully vested after five years; your contributions 100 percent vested immediately
