Unique Cooking School Offered to Children

St. Alexius Medical Center and Kohl’s Cares® is teaming up once again to teach children in our community about health and wellness.  “Play with your Food” – A Kid’s Cooking Adventure is taking place on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Century High School.  The free cooking school is for children in 4th and 5th grade and a caregiver.

Join St. Alexius’ head chef to learn about healthy food choices and how to prepare, simple, fun snacks the family will enjoy!  While the children “play” in the kitchen, the adults will be given an educational tour of Dan’s Supermarket provided by NDSU Extension Service and Bismarck-Mandan Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.  Learn to shop with a plan, buy on a budget, read food labels, find whole grains and receive healthy recipes.

There are four class times to choose from.

Saturday, March 23
9:00 to 10:30 a.m.
11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Space is limited.  Please register by calling St. Alexius’ Foundation office at 530-7065.

Play with your Food
Mother always said, "Never play with your food." Well, today some children were encouraged to do so. They learned about nutrition, food preparation, knife handling and how to make healthy microwaveable pita pizzas through the St. Alexius and Kohl’s cooking adventure class today.  Parents were also given lessons on healthy grocery shopping. The children were encouraged to be creative and add a lot of color to their pies.

(Duane Ehrens, St. Alexius Head Chef):  "It`s just a fun, good- fun day for kids to come and learn about food and play with their food. So they get accustomed to healthy choices and fun things they can do to make cooking joyful, so it’s not such a tedious task to prepare a meal.” There will be two more cooking lessons Saturday, March 23 at Century High School.  Registration is required.
