A Letter to our Community

Take a moment to think about what makes Bismarck and Mandan a special place to live: our schools, our civic institutions, our place at the center of North Dakota government … and our ability to care for those in need. For 131 years, CHI St. Alexius Health has proudly stood at the center of our healthcare community.

It is no secret that our country’s healthcare system is going through fundamental transformation. Changes on the national, state, and local levels are rewriting the rules for how each of us receives and pays for our healthcare services. The changes are particularly profound for those of us who deliver care.

Bismarck and Mandan are close-knit communities. Many of you have heard from friends, neighbors, and the media that CHI St. Alexius Health is in the midst of our own transformation, one driven by the forces of healthcare change. We are not alone. Catholic Health Initiatives’ national and division ministries are going through the same process. In fact, many healthcare organizations across the United States are changing organizational structures and approaches to delivering care.

What does transformation mean for CHI St. Alexius Health? It means we are streamlining hospital operations. It means we are making our care more efficient. It means we are adapting to reduced financial reimbursement. Sadly, it also means we have had to reduce our workforce. Each change is carefully thought through. No decision is taken lightly.

Who will CHI St. Alexius Health be in the future? We will remain dedicated to providing high-quality, safe patient care, and creating an outstanding patient care experience; one which encompasses everything from customer service to patient-centeredness and care coordination among providers. We will continue to be recognized for providing quality care and delivering the highest level of expertise in the name of healing.

Our foundation is built on the belief of God’s love and the meaning of Jesus’ healing ministry. This certainty is what inspired our founding Benedictine Sisters to open a hospital for the people of the Dakota Territory back in 1885. Our legacy and our faith-based mission make CHI St. Alexius Health unique and different from other healthcare systems. Our belief in the preservation of Catholic healthcare and its commitment to care of the sick continues to motivate us today.

We know our region needs a strong CHI St. Alexius Health. Our strength comes from our ability to meet your healthcare needs. We are changing in ways that anticipate the evolving healthcare landscape. We are delivering care in innovative ways that provide optimum service to our patients. We are maintaining our nationally-recognized culture of excellence in patient care. We are – and will remain – your partner as we’re stronger, healthier, and better together.

Sincerely,
Kurt R. Schley
