Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week

To celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, St. Alexius associates in Women’s and Children’s have been raising awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding. Yesterday, they held a special celebration during Well Baby Clinic to give support and encouragement to mothers who have decided to breastfeed. The party included a cake, refreshments, decorations and prizes.

World Breastfeeding Week is an annual event celebrated in more than 170 countries. The week highlights the importance of increasing protection, promotion and support for breastfeeding. In 2013, St. Alexius Medical Center was recognized as "Infant Friendly" by the North Dakota Department of Health.

Stephanie Goroski, director of Women’s and Children’s said: “St. Alexius fully supports breastfeeding in our community and is a proud supporter of World Breastfeeding Week. In addition, policies have long been established to allow associates to breastfeed or pump in the workplace.”

While breastfeeding might be an easy decision for some, it can get overwhelming. “We hold several free breastfeeding basics classes throughout the year designed for women planning to breastfeed or those who World Breastfeeding Weekare undecided,” stated Donna Hintz, clinical educator for the Birth Place. “Breastfeeding consultations are available with a certified lactation counselor in conjunction with our Well Baby Clinic to provide additional support to the mother after discharge from the hospital.”
