Ankle-Brachial Index - Center for Family Medicine Mandan
What is it?
An ankle-Brachial index measures the fall in blood pressure in the legs compared to blood pressure in the arms. It is a screening test for blockages called peripheral vascular disease.
Why do I need it?
Your doctor may recommend this test if you have symptoms of leg pain or cramping that is worse with walking, or if you have a history of heart disease or other risk factors for peripheral vascular disease.
How is it done?
A doppler probe is used to listen to your pulse as your blood pressure is checked in the arm and at the ankle. The numbers are used to calculate a ratio which tells the doctor whether you may be at risk for blockages in the blood vessels. At the Center for Family Medicine, we do ABI's in the clinic so results are immediately available.
