Small Bowl Enteroclysis - Imaging Center

Please report to Admitting 15 minutes before your scheduled exam time.

PREP: It is important for your stomach to be empty for this procedure. You are not to smoke, eat, or drink anything after midnight. You are also not to chew gum. If you think you are pregnant, please tell your doctor. This procedure may be harmful to the fetus.

PURPOSE: A small bowel enteroclysis is a radiographic examination of the intestinal tract from the stomach to where it ends at the colon.

WHAT TO EXPECT: You will be brought into an x-ray exam room and asked to lie on your back on the x-ray table. A radiologist will insert a nasal-gastric tube through your nose until it reaches the small bowel. Cellulose and barium solutions will be given through this tube. This will allow your small bowel to be visualized. X-ray films will be taken until the solution reaches the large intestine.

POST EXAM INFORMATION: You will be given a stool softener. These tablets should be taken with food. You are also encouraged to increase your water intake for the remainder of the day. Your physician will discuss the results of this test with you.

TIME FRAME: This procedure usually lasts 1 hour; however, it can take longer.
