Renal Scan - Imaging Center

Please report to Admitting 15 minutes before your scheduled exam time.

PREP: No barium studies 2-3 days prior to the scan. Drink plenty of fluids before exam.

PURPOSE: A Renal Scan is done to check the size, shape, and function of the kidneys.

WHAT TO EXPECT: You will be asked to lie on a scanning table for 30 minutes. An injection of a radioactive material will be made into a vein in your arm. The camera, which is below the table, will scan this material as it collects in and filters out of your kidneys. You will need to lie still during the entire exam.

TIME FRAME: 45 minutes

POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS: Minimal to no side effects from the radioactive isotope.

IF YOU ARE PREGNANT, INFORM THE TECHNOLOGIST BEFORE THE EXAM.
