PET Scan - Imaging Center

PREP: Tell your doctor is you are pregnant or nursing. Tell your Doctor if you are a diabetic.

Take your prescribed medications the day of the test. Avoid beverages with caffeine and sugar. Fast for 4 - 6 hours prior to the scan - If your scan is in the morning you may be asked to have nothing after midnight. Wear comfortable clothes.

PURPOSE: A PET Scan (Positive Emission Tomography) can provide important information about conditions affecting the heart, brain, and other organs. It provides information about the structure and function of your organs.

WHAT TO EXPECT: To begin the procedure a small amount of radioactive glucose is injected into your bloodstream. After the injection, you will wait approximately 1 hour while the injected material is distributed throughout your body. Then you will be asked to lie on a table that passes slowly through a scanner. The PET Scanner resembles a CT scanner.

TIME FRAME: 11/2 to 3 hours

HOW WILL I FEEL AFTERWARDS: You should feel fine. There are no side effects from the injected material.

POST PROCEDURE INFORMATION: A Radiologist will prepare a diagnostic report. Your doctor will contact you with the result of the PET Scan.

POST PROCEDURE CARE: Drink plenty of water ( an extra 64 ounces) within the 24 hours following your PET Scan. After you void, flush the toilet twice. If you are around children do not hold them for the 24 hours following your PET Scan.
