Please report to Admitting 15 minutes before your scheduled exam time.
PREP: A chest x-ray the day of the exam is required. No patient prep.
PURPOSE: A Lung Scan is done to study the lungs, checking for the presence of blood clots known as pulmonary emboli.
WHAT TO EXPECT: The procedure has two parts:
Part 1: The technologist will place a small mouth piece in your mouth for you to breath a radioactive mist into your lungs. Several scans will be taken with you lying on a scan table to see how this material collects in the lungs. This will show how well your lungs are breathing for you.
Part 2: The technologist will inject a radioactive material into a vein which will travel through the bloodstream to the lungs. Several scans will be acquired with you lying on a scan table to see how this material collects in the lungs. This will show how good the circulation of blood is to the lungs.
TIME FRAME: 60 minutes
POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS: Minimal to no side effects from the radioactive isotope.
