Bone Scan - Imaging Center

Please report to Admitting 15 minutes before your scheduled exam time.

PREP: No barium studies 2-3 days prior to the scan.

PURPOSE: A Bone Scan is done to study the bones for signs of arthritis, inflammation, cancers, or stress fractures.

WHAT TO EXPECT: This test is composed of two parts. During the first part of the test you will be given an injection of a radioactive isotope into a vein in your arm. This material will be absorbed into the bones from the bloodstream. Scans may be taken during the injection if indicated. You will be asked to return for the second part of the test 3-4 hours later. The technologist will give you the time to return. You should drink plenty of fluids during the waiting period (3-4 tall glasses of any beverage). The second part of the test involves lying on a scanning table while a series of scans are performed. You will need to lie very still during the entire test.

TIME FRAME: 30-45 minutes

POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS: Minimal to no side effects from the radioactive isotope.

IF YOU ARE PREGNANT, INFORM THE TECHNOLOGIST BEFORE THE EXAM.
